A Family by Guy de Maupassant

QUESTION 1

What does the author mean by:

There was nothing left for him to do in this life, nothing whatever. He had one single wish left, one sole pleasure; why not grant him that last solace until he died?

In my opinion, the author mean by "There was nothing left for him to do in this life, nothing whatever. He had one single wish left, one sole pleasure; why not grant him that last solace until he died?" is in order that old man cannot do anything heavy work anymore. This is because their physically is too weak to do anything and its can affect bad influence to their health. Cause of this, it would also depend on someone shoulder to take care of them. To care bout their cleaness, their cloth, their drink and eat also their fully time to take some rest. It is doesn't wrong we as their family should take that responsibility to take care of them. Not to put them at the OldFolk's Home. They also have heart to feel sad if we don't care bout them. Cherish their day. Appreciate them, for what they has done and sacrifice for entire of their life. Give and fulfill for their wishes before their last breath.

QUESTION 3

Do you think the “I” is a male or female? Why do you think so?

I think " I " in this short story is a female. Firstly, it is because in the paragraph 19 you can look the paragraph says " I was then shown to my room to change my dress for dinner " shows that there is impossible for man to wear dress unless he is definitely transgender.

Secondly, It always be a female. This is because the expression emotion in this story such like a woman expression. Why did I say like that? The evidence that I can pick from this short story, you can look at the paragraph which it says " I looked at him closely, trying to discover in that broad face the features I held so dear. His eyes alone had not changed, but I no longer saw the same expression in them, and I said to myself  " If the expression be the reflection of the mind, the thought in that head are not what they used to be formerly, those thought which I knew so well " It show like some intimate feeling. No way a guy could express such of this word.

Lastly, " snoring by the side of his ugly wife " it shows an expression of a woman who have being jealous with Simon's wife. So, 100%  I agree to say that " I " in this short story is prefer to female.

What do you understand from the phrase ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder’?

What did I understand from the phrase " beauty is in the eye of the beholder " is beauty is in the eye of the beholder its means that each individual person see a beauty different than the other. You may see a person, a rabbit or a a cat, a car, a painting or anything else and to you each is beautiful within itself. While another person may see the same individual items and not think them look beautiful. Your man may be look gorgeous to you while your friend may see him as only average looking. Your best friend and you may see a diamond ring at a jeweler a your friend just think it is absolutely stunning. On the other hand, you may feel that it is hideous. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty by James Thurber

QUESTION 1

What are the moral values that you have learnt from the short story?

What I have learnt, moral value that can grab from this short story is patient. Patient to grab or wait the dream comes true. Why I said like that? It is because Walter Mitty knows his lacking himself. He has his own dream for his life. Can be model for those who always be a narrow minded person. Even his dream not achieved yet. Maybe in a one fine day, Walter Mitty's dream will comes true. But, he must make some effort to grab for what he want. All people have dream. Its not majority. But the rest of those whose don't have any dream will think that dreaming will waste their time. In my ways, I like be a dreamer. Cause it will give a support for me to achieved something. We could hightlight for what we want. But, dream are not taking you anywhere unless you are certainly sure about getting it or to in it.

QUESTION 2

Who is your favourite character in the short story. Provide reasons for your answer.

My favourite character in this short story is Walter Mitty. This is because Walter Mitty shows that he is very forgetful and a really stubborn man with a vivid imagination. He is constantly being distracted and starts to day dream often.

Such as Walter Mitty is a very forgetful. Most of this is probably caused by his constant day dreaming throughout this trip into town and not concentrating too hard on what he's doing. Once Walter Mitty had dropped off his wife for her hair appointment, he began to do his shopping. Walter Mitty picks up his overshoes and then " Walter Mitty began to wonder what the other thing was his wife had told him to get. She had told him twice before they left. Also, a little later on, Walter MItty was always getting something wrong. This last quote shows that Walter Mitty must forget things quite often.

Besides, day dreaming. Throughout the whole story, Walter Mitty is being distracted easily by everyday events. His dreams turn these simple events into wild fantasies such as being a surgeon, bomber pilot, and a captain of sea vessel. An example of how he changes something from everyday life into a dream occurs when Walter Mitty is trying to remember what is was his wife had told him to get, then a paper boy when by shouting something about trial. Walter Mitty quickly went into one of his day dreams and was suddenly on trial for murder in his dream. The story is based on Walter Mitty's dream, so obviously he had a vivid imagination and day dreams often.

QUESTION 3

Provide an alternate ending to the short story.

Walter Mitty is facing a firing squad. Hardly victorious. It's about to be shot. You could view the firing squad symbolically, as representative of the people in the real world who hassle Mitty about being a dreamer. In this sense, the ending seems like a defeat for Mitty. He can dream all he wants, but there are always going to be people who " shoot " him for it. This is a testament to the power of the human will and imagination. Mitty is still strong and proud, even though he's treated as a nobody by most of people around him.

The Open Window by H. H. Munro (Saki) (1870-1916)

QUESTION 1

What are the moral values that you have learnt from the short story?

The moral values that I have learnt from this short story is firstly, sensitivity. We should aware of other's feeling and needs. As a hostess's staff we need to understand our guest's needs and make sure they 100% comfartable with hospitality given. In the short story, Vera and Mrs. Sappleton fail to realize Nuttel's restless condition. Vera should attentive towards Nuttel instead of frightening him because he is the guest and the newcomer. As for Mrs. Sappleton, she should have realizes that Nuttel is eager to change the topic of their conversation and find out the cause of his restlessness. She should give him her full attention .

Secondly, not to trust people so easily. We shouldn't be so naive when it comes to dealing with people. This value is very much connected to Nuttel's character because of judging from the fact that he had just entered an territory completely unknown to him before this, he should be more coutious and alert of the people around him as well as surrounding. Nuttel had fallen for Vera's word right from the beginning without having any second thought.

Thirdly, never assume things. The fact that Vera appeared to know her facts well, Nuttel should have taken the initiative to perhaps ask Mrs. Sappleton for affirmation. He should have just consumed every bit of Vera's words as she is still only a child.

QUESTION 2

Who is your favourite character in the short story. Provide reasons for your answer.

My favourite character in this short story is Vera. Who is storyteller without equal, who is quickly able to seize on details and weave convincing tales to horrific effect. And also who is sees in Framton Nuttel an object for one of her stories, as she is quick to establish that he knows nobody from the area and thus she is free to use her excellent wit and intelligence to create a table that will shock Mr. Framton Nuttel for her own amusement.

The reason that I like character is firstly, she has self - possessiveness.

Secondly, she has self - confidence. She is sure enough for herself to begin a conversation with a perfect stranger and keep him entertained until the arrival of her aunt, Mrs. Sappleton.

Thirdly, intelligent and alert. Its notices that Nuttel is kind of man who could be easily made to believe that fantastic story she tells and capitalizes on that fact.

Fourthly, shrewd and cunning. The searching questions she ask quite casually to ensure that Nuttel knows nothing about her family or neighbourhood.

And lastly, Vera is creative and imaginative. Notice details of the routine that is followed when her uncle go out snipe shooting and then uses those details in her short story.

QUESTION 3

Provide an alternate ending to the short story.

The alternate ending of this story is The Heart Condition. Mr Nuttel was scared so much by the sight of these " ghosts " he fainted right there on the spot. Vera then made up a story that he said he had a heart condition that sometimes causes him to go unconcious, and the only to wake him up was to pour water over him. So that's waht they did. Vera thought it was hilarious but in the end Mr. Nuttel was awake he told them her little fib and for the rest of his stay at there. She had to wait on him hand and foot. Vera learned she isn't as clever as she thought she was.
